Sligo Chamber Annual Dinner 2013
An Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD received a standing ovation from over 300 guests at Sligo Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Annual Dinner held in the Clarion Hotel on Saturday last. Responding to Chamber President, Trevor McDaid, who in his presidential address pleaded for greater engagement with the business community from public bodies at both a local and national level the Taoiseach issued a challenge to the business community of the North West of Ireland. “Set out your vision for 2020, be ambitious, think on a regional basis and Government will support you” the Taoiseach said.
The Chamber Annual Dinner is the highlight of the business social calendar in Sligo. This year’s event was sponsored by Collins McNicholas HR and Recruitment Company and was attended by over 300 guests representing the business, media, political and academic community in County Sligo. Earlier in the evening, the guests listened to Sligo’s Mayor Cllr Marcella McGarry as she addressed the room highlighting Sligo’s achievement in being named as European Town of Sport 2014. The Chamber’s Business Person of the Year, Jim O’Regan from AbbVie also addressed the guests highlighting AbbVie’s origins in Sligo and its continuing investment in Sligo through infrastructure and personnel.
Speaking after the dinner, Chamber President said that it was a great honour to have the Taoiseach as a special guest on the evening and that the Taoiseach’s challenge to the business community would be met. “We will revert to the Taoiseach with our plans and ideas, noting his comments in relation to adopting a regional perspective, and hopefully this will provide a vehicle for a more meaningful engagement with the public bodies who are supposed to be supporting us in generating employment in our Town, County and Region” Mr McDaid concluded.
