2014 promises to be an exciting year for Sligo and Sligo Chamber. Sligo hosts the All Ireland Fleadh from 10th - 17th of August and planning is well underway to ensure that as many as up to 350,000 visitors are welcomed to our Town and County to enjoy all that Sligo has to offer. This is a wonderful opportunity for all of Sligo to come together around an event that will showcase our rich musical legacy as well as our wonderful landscape and the Chamber is working very closely with the organisers to ensure that this opportunity is maximised.
In addition, the Chamber is heavily involved in Sligo hosting an International athletics event, theSionnach Relay, on 26th – 27th July. The event is based around the concept of the Ragnar Relay in the United States and the promoters of the event, based in the United States with affiliations to Sligo expect to see as many as 1,000 American visitors participate in the event. The event will be launched by the Minister for Sport, Michael Ring TD on Thursday 30th January along with the Launch of Sligo as the European City of Sport for 2014.
The Chamber is also involved in planning at a National and Local level for the YEATS 2015 Celebrations. 2015 marks the 150th anniversary of WB Yeats’ birth and it is proposed that this will be celebrated throughout 2015 at a local, national and International level. At home, WB Yeats’ role in creating and reimagining Ireland’s cultural identity at the turn of the 20th century is an inspiration worth drawing on for this century, at this time, to reimagine Ireland for this century. Celebrating his contribution to our renewed identity is both an appropriate prelude and complement to the important centenary celebrations planned for 2016 and the Rising.
The Chamber is progressing its work in relation to the Taoiseach’s Challenge, laid down on Nov 9th. Regional meetings have already been held with Tourism, Industry and Enterprise groups and it is hoped that a paper outlining the vision, challenges and opportunities from the perspective of the business community will be finalised towards mid-May.
The Chamber has welcomed the new County Manager, Mr Ciarán Hayes in his new role and looks forward towards working closely with him and his executive in our shared goal of “Helping Sligo Grow”. The Chamber intends through its Strategic Teams to engage proactively with the Council in 2014 in order to see progress on a number of issues, with priority going towards developing the City core and the development of tourism and industrial infrastructure. The Chamber has also acknowledged the excellent work of the County Council in bringing the development of the N4 to its current stage.
